FAQ

Can I see Weaving of Coconut Leaves in Kerala?

Weaving of coconut leaves or fronds is a widely-practiced occupation in Kerala. The woven leaves are used for thatching houses, in making baskets and hats. There are places in Kerala, where one can see the practice on a wider scale. Among them are:

Alappuzha:  This coastal town, also known as Alleppey, is famous for its backwaters and beaches. But it also has a rich tradition of coconut frond weaving. There are places and villages in and around Alappuzha, like the Alappuzha Beach and Kuttanad, where one can witness this activity.

Kumarakom: A region noted for its natural settings and bird life, Kumarakom is another centre noted for skilled coconut leaf weavers. Here, one can observe the process and even get some hands-on experience under the guidance of local artisans.

Thiruvananthapuram: The capital city of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram, also has a flourishing coconut leaf-weaving industry. You can find artisans creating intricate mats, baskets and other decorative items in various parts of the district.

Besides these locations one can also visit local fairs and exhibitions, especially during the time of Onam or may enquire at local tourist information centres for getting information on weaving centres.
