Ceremonial Makeup in Theyyam

Theyyam is one of the most popular ritual art forms in Kerala. It is performed in temples in the northern part of Kerala. The art form is characterized by vibrant facial makeup and costumes. The rituals are not identical. The costume and accessories differ from one character to another. Traditional dyes are made using natural materials. White colour is made from rice paste and yellow from turmeric. Red is the dominant colour and it is made by mixing turmeric and limestone. The crown (mudi) is made of materials like coconut, arecanut, shells and peacock feather. Body painting of Theyyam differs from one type to another. The waist dress is made of coconut leaves. Shiny ornaments and accessories are worn in Theyyam performances. Theyyams also wear bangles known as Katakam and Chutakam and small anklets. In certain Theyyams, flaming country torches are attached at the waist.
