Chinese contribution to Kerala Culture

There were maritime trade connections between Kerala and China in the ancient past. Chinese porcelain, silk and other materials were some of the popular articles which were bought by practically every household in Kerala. The small saucepan made of iron used for seasoning and cooking is called Cheenachatti. The Chinese origin of the objects is very much evident in the use of words like Cheenachatti and Cheenavala (Chinese fishing nets). Cheenimulaku is used to refer to a small green chilli. Chinese potatoes known as Koorka in Malayalam are a popular tuber food crop in Kerala. The ceramic vessel used for storing pickles is called Cheenabharani.
