The monsoon season; especially the southwest monsoon (June to August) transforms Kerala into a unique water world.
This is a period when water-based activities bring up some of the skills and physical prowess of the people of Kerala. One such activity is called Ootha Pidutham (a traditional way of catching fish when rivers overflow). One can witness this in many parts of the state; but it is quite common in the districts of Kottayam and Alappuzha.
Monsoon period also marks the beginning of the traditional healthcare practices in Kerala, based on the centuries’ old healthcare wisdom of Ayurveda and Panchakarma.
It is also the time when the swollen water bodies of Kerala witness boat races. The world-renowned Nehru Trophy Boat Race in the backwaters of Alappuzha; the ceremonial Aranmula Uthrattathi Vallam Kali; the Champakkulam Boat Race in Alappuzha and many other big and small events make for exciting times to natives as well as visitors.
These days one can also enjoy lots of outdoor activities, like mud football and rain-based activities.
