The history of Kathakali can be traced back to the 17th century. Its roots can be found in earlier dance and theatrical traditions of Kerala. Kathakali evolved from the classical dance-drama known as Ramanattam which itself was influenced by traditional folk and ritualistic art forms of Kerala. Kathakali performances were primarily held in temple courtyards, often as all-night performances dedicated to deities. The influence of the martial arts tradition of Kerala lent dynamic movements and stylized gestures to the dance. Since the 17th century, Kathakali has undergone drastic changes in its form and content.
