It is up to the visitor to decide whether or not to be in Kerala in the month of June when the south-west monsoon is quite active. If the rains are okay and if one wishes to be part of a fully wet and green Kerala, then this is the perfect time to be in the state. And it is also the period for rejuvenation therapy in Kerala. Practices like oil massage and specially prepared food of medicinal value take centre stage during this period called ‘karkkadakam’ (a Malayalam month). It is not a period of rejuvenation for humans only but also for animals. Elephants that are owned by temples and certain household undergo special treatment during this period. At some places it is held as a special event called aanayoottu (feeding of elephants) with public participation. One can witness this in Vadakkumnathan temple and in the Guruvayur temple, both in Thrissur district. One can also witness or partake in the annual Malabar River Festival held during this period in which international kayaking competition is held at Chalipuzha and Iruvanjipuzha in Kozhikode district.
