FAQ

Is Bhoota Kola of Karnataka similar to Theyyam of Kerala?

Bhoota Kola is a ritualistic art form originating from the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts in Karnataka as well as the northern parts of Kasaragod district in Kerala. Similar to the Theyyam performance, Bhoota Kola also involves an oracle through which devotees seek blessings to bring good fortune and remove obstacles or hardships from their lives.

Performed by the Tuluva community, who speak the Tulu language and follow animistic beliefs, Bhoota Kola is carried out to invoke the spirits of Nature.

The performance itself closely mirrors the Theyyam ritual in northern Kerala, with both art forms sharing similar attire, makeup, dance movements and tribal origins. These shared elements highlight the deep spiritual and cultural connections between the two practices.
