FAQ

Is Kochi and Ernakulam the same?

Ernakulam, one of Kerala's districts, is home to the vibrant city of Kochi (Cochin), a major port city along the Laccadive Sea. Often referred to interchangeably as Ernakulam, Kochi is renowned for its historical and cultural significance as well as its modern development.

Governed by the Cochin Municipal Corporation, the growth and infrastructure of the city are overseen by bodies like the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) and the Goshree Islands Development Authority (GIDA).

Known as the "Queen of the Arabian Sea," Kochi has a rich history as a spice trading hub. The ancient port of Muziris in the region facilitated trade with the Romans, the Persians, the Arabs and the Chinese. During the 16th century, the Portuguese established Fort Kochi (Fort Emmanuel), which was later taken over by the Dutch and subsequently, the British.

Today, Kochi stands as the commercial capital of Kerala, blending its historical legacy with modern advancements. It is the only city in India to feature a water metro system, and the Cochin International Airport holds the distinction of being the world's first airport to operate entirely on solar power.
