FAQ

Is there any Dress Code for Padmanabha Swamy Temple?

There is a strict dress code that needs to be followed while entering the temple. Men need to wear mundu or dhoti (worn around the waist and reaching up to the heels) and should not wear shirts of any kind.

Women need to wear sari, mundum neriyathum (set-mundu), skirt-and-blouse, or half-sari.

Dhotis are available on rent at the temple entrance. Nowadays temple authorities allow wearing of dhotis over pants or churidar to avoid inconvenience to the devotees.

The present-day Padmanabha Swamy temple underwent renovation in 1730 during the reign of the Marthanda Varma, the Maharaja of Travancore. Following the renovation the old wooden idol was replaced by the one that we see today. It is made of highly complex amalgam known as Katusarkarayogam and contains 12008 Salagrams (a kind of stone, considered auspicious) within it. As per tradition, the members of the Travancore royal family continue to participate in the temple ceremonies as Padmanabha Daasas or the servants of Lord Padmanabha.
