The Kuttanad region in Kerala, the southernmost state of India, has lands that lie below the sea level. These lands were reclaimed from the backwaters and separated by walls of clay called dykes (as found in the Netherlands). The land here is on an average 2.2 m below the sea level. The region of Kuttanad is spread over three districts in Kerala, viz. Alappuzha (Alleppey), Kottayam and Pathanamthitta. It is also a world renowned as a travel destination due to its picturesque settings marked by vast expanses of paddy fields and mesmerizing backwaters. The backwaters in and around Kuttanad are also noted for globally acclaimed annual boat races like the Nehru Trophy Boat Race held on the Punnamada backwaters, the Champakkulam boat race and the Payippad boat race.
