Kannur Traditional Art Events

Kannur, like many other regions in Kerala is noted for its unique cultural heritage.

Among the popular ones are:
Theyyam: It is considered as a sacred dance and ritual performed by artistes in colourful costumes. Held throughout the year, the Theyyam season reaches its peak between December and March, especially during festivals and religious events.

Poorakkali: This is a ritualistic dance performed in Bhagavathy temples and sacred groves. This ritual is usually performed during special occasions, especially during festivals and religious events.

Kalaripayattu: It is the traditional martial art form of Kerala, which is more than 1500 years old. There are regular performances and training sessions at many centres in Kannur, which are done as per traditions. It demands high levels of discipline and focus from the students.

Vadakkan Pattukal: Also known as northern ballads, these are folk songs that narrate heroic tales from the past.  They are performed throughout the year, especially during festivals and cultural events.
