Theyyam is a sacred ritual. The performers imbibe the craft and religious importance as a part of family tradition dating back centuries. For the performers, it is not just a ritual but an experience that gives them blessings from the divine. Each temple is devoted to different forms of Theyyam. The performers go through a rigid period of abstinence, prayer, fasting and meditation before each performance. The objective is to transform themselves into the deity and to invoke the sense of divinity among the spectators.
