FAQ

What are the Traditional Martial Arts of Kerala?

Kerala boasts a rich history of martial arts, Kalaripayattu being the most prominent and well-known among them.

Kalaripayattu is reckoned as the ‘Mother of All Martial Arts’. It is believed to have originated in Kerala over 3000 years ago. Legends attribute its creation to sage Parasurama. It was traditionally practised by warriors, and served as a crucial part of military training.

Kalaripayattu training is holistic, focusing on physical fitness, self-defence techniques and mental discipline. It involves rigorous exercises, weapon training and the development of agility, strength and stamina. Students train barehanded as well as with various weapons like swords, staffs, shields and machetes.

The martial art of Kalaripayattu has evolved into various styles over time, each with its emphasis on specific techniques and weapons. The two most prominent styles are the northern style (vadakkan kalari) and the southern style (thekkan kalari).

Kalaripayattu emphasizes the use of the opponent's own strength against him/her, employing efficient movements and pressure points to gain the upper hand. Techniques often mimic animal movements, incorporating grace and power. This martial art form is no longer just a fighting style but a cultural heritage. Today, it's practised for self-defence, fitness and cultural preservation.
