Mundakan is one of the three main traditional growing / cultivation seasons of rice / paddy in Kerala, viz. Virippu, Mundakan and Puncha. It is the second crop after the cultivation of Virippu crop. The Mundakan growing season starts with the sowing of seeds in August / September and culminates with harvest in February.
There are two more traditional growing season for rice in Kerala namely, Virippu and Puncha.
Palakkad, Alappuzha, Thrissur and Kottayam districts of Kerala account for about 80 percent of the total production of rice in Kerala. Paddy cultivation in Kuttanad takes place in fields that are below the sea-level. Surrounded by backwaters, these fields are rich in biomass and give good yield.
The Kuttanad region of Kerala, lies mostly in the district of Alappuzha and covers parts of Pathanamthitta and Kottayam districts.
