FAQ

What is the speciality of Houseboats in Kerala compared to those in Srinagar, Kashmir?

If one were to compare the houseboats of Kerala and Kashmir, the first and foremost factor to take into consideration should be the respective waterbodies. In Kerala, the houseboats cruise in the backwaters, which is a network of canals, lakes, rivers, and lagoons. These waterways are ideal for leisurely cruises.

On the other hand, in Kashmir, the houseboats move on Dal Lake and sometimes in the Jhelum River. Dal Lake is larger but not as extensive as the Kerala backwaters. The environment can be more lively, with vendors and shikara traffic present.

As far as the traditional houseboats of Kerala are concerned they were rice barges used for transporting goods in olden days. Today, they are primarily used for tourism, offering a luxurious and comfortable way to explore the backwaters. In Kashmir, the houseboats are solely used for travel and leisure.

Houseboats in Kerala are not quick moving ones. They typically follow designated routes on the backwaters and remain stationary overnight. The houseboats in Kashmir have more mobility within the confines of Dal Lake. They can move around more freely and might be anchored in different locations each night depending on the preference of the guest.

And when it comes to experiences, in Kerala, the focus is on the natural beauty of the backwaters, backwater village life and the local flora and fauna. In Kashmir, the houseboats offer you a cultural experience, allowing you to admire the scenic beauty of the lake as well as opportunities to interact with local vendors selling souvenirs and snacks.

Taking stock of the amenities, Kerala houseboats range from basic to very luxurious, offering varying levels of amenities like air-conditioning, private balconies and bathrooms. On the other hand, Kashmiri houseboats tend to be smaller and less luxurious. However, they still provide comfortable accommodation with basic amenities like attached bathrooms and comfortable seating areas.
