Generally, among the people following Hindu religious traditions, the traditional dress for men in Kerala is dhothi (a unstitched piece of white cloth which is worn around the waist and reaches up to the ankle) and shirt. Women traditionally wore mundu, neriyathu and jacket (blouse). Mundu is meant for the lower half of the body and neriyathu and blouse for the upper body.
These traditional dresses are now mostly worn during special occasions like festivals, birthdays and for visits to places of worship.
Among those hailing from the Muslim community, the traditional men folk wear mundu and shirt and also long sleeved kurtas, and the women wear mundu and a jacket along with a head scarf.
