One of the traditional growing / cultivation season of rice / paddy in Kerala is Virippu. This is the first paddy growing season and starts with the sowing of seeds in April-May and ends with harvest in September-October. There are two more traditional growing seasons for rice in Kerala namely, Mundakan and Puncha.
Palakkad, Alappuzha, Thrissur and Kottayam districts of Kerala account for about 80 percent of the total production of rice in Kerala. Paddy cultivation in Kuttanad takes place in fields that are below the sea level. Surrounded by backwaters, these fields are rich in biomass and give good yield.
The Kuttanad region of Kerala, lies mostly in the district of Alappuzha and covers parts of Pathanamthitta and Kottayam districts.
