What is Virippu season?

The cultivation season in the state, the first crop season Virippu commences with sowing of seeds in April-May and concludes with harvest in September-October. There are two more traditional growing season for rice in Kerala namely, Mundakan and Puncha. 

Palakkad, Alappuzha, Thrissur and Kottayam districts of Kerala account for about 80 percent of the total production of rice in Kerala. Paddy cultivation in Kuttanad takes place in fields that are below the sea level. Surrounded by backwaters, these fields are rich in biomass and give good yield. 

The Kuttanad region of Kerala, lies mostly in the district of Alappuzha and covers parts of Pathanamthitta and Kottayam districts.
