The region of Kuttanad in the southern state of Kerala is noted for its paddy fields that lie 2.2 m below the sea level. This is the lowest land region in India. It's a region spread across the Alappuzha, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta districts of Kerala. The region is famous for its vast paddy fields and is also known as the Rice Bowl of Kerala. There are parts of backwaters in and around Kuttanad that were reclaimed for paddy (rice) cultivation. The serene backwater stretches and the never-ending stretches of paddy fields are the hallmarks of this region. The houseboats here, transformed from the traditional kettuvallam (rice barge) have become an iconic sight in the backwaters of Kerala. A cruise on these houseboats offers plenty of sights and also opportunities to take a close look at backwater life as well as vocations like fishing, shell collection, rice farming and rearing of ducks.
