Kerala is the leading state in coir production in India. This southern state in India accounts for 90% of India's total coir products. In Kerala, the backwater district of Alappuzha takes credit for producing some of the finest grades of coir.
Alappuzha is also where the first coir factory in Kerala 'Darragh Smail & Co.' was established. It was in 1859. Here, the production of coir fibre is quite popular in households too. Currently the district has several production units for manufacturing raw coir and also finished products.
One can visit coir villages in and around Alappuzha, like Alappuzha beach and Kuttanad to witness the traditional process of coir making.
Located about 27 km north of Alappuzha, Chendamangalam is a village famous for its coir production. Here, you can see skilled artisans using traditional techniques to separate fibres, spin them into yarn and weave beautiful coir products.
Apart from these places, you can also visit government run coir processing units to see large-scale coir production.
