Why is Varkala beach so popular and what are the activities I can do in Varkala Beach?

Varkala in the state of Kerala is very appealing to the visitors because of the combination of a beautiful cliff and a beach. The 150-metre-high laterite cliff here overlooks the Arabian Sea and offers a beautiful view of the golden beach below and the turquoise-coloured sea. 

The beach here also gains significance from a ritual point of view. It is also known as Papanaasam which in the local language of Malayalam means ‘washing away of sins’. Legend says that dipping in the waters here can cleanse your soul. The Varkala beach is also close to the 2000-year-old Janardhana Swamy temple.

There are many spas close to the Varkala Beach if you wish to undergo Ayurveda therapies for wellness. Many Ayurveda centres offer treatments and retreats, making it an ideal destination for relaxation and rejuvenation. 

There are plenty of beach shacks serving fresh seafood and local cuisine, alongside shops selling souvenirs and handicrafts. Out on the beach, one can indulge in sunbathing and swimming. The waves can be strong at times, so be sure to check the conditions before swimming. It is also a noted destination for surfing. 

The serene atmosphere of Varkala beach makes it a perfect place to practice yoga and meditation. Many resorts and yoga centres offer classes for all levels. A leisurely walk along the cliff path, enjoying the panoramic views of the beach and the sea, is another pleasurable experience. You may also visit many shops selling souvenirs, handicrafts, clothes and jewellery.
