Kottakkal Arya Vaidyasala

The small town of Kottakkal in the Northern district of Malappuram in Kerala is home to Kottakkal Arya Vaidyasala (KAV), the renowned centre for Ayurveda in Kerala. It is one of the pioneering institutions of Ayurveda in Kerala. Started essentially as a village clinic, it has now grown into a multi-unit and multi-disciplinary organization.

Founded in 1902 by the visionary physician and philanthropist, the late Vaidyaratnam P.S. Warrier, KAV has branches all over Kerala and in other parts of the India, including the capital of India, New Delhi. P.S. Warrier learned Ayurveda under the classical gurukula system and acquired proficiency in the practice of Allopathy also. In 1933, in recognition of his valuable services to humanity, P.S. Warrier was conferred the distinguished title of Vaidyaratna by Viceroy and Governor General of India at that time.

More than a century old Ayurveda centre in Kerala, KAV is a charitable institution engaged in the practice and propagation of Ayurveda, the ancient health care system of India. Arya Vaidya Sala offers classical Ayurvedic medicines and authentic Ayurvedic treatments and therapies to patients from all over India and abroad. It runs an Ayurvedic research centre, a nursing home and a hospital.

Kottakkal Arya Vaidyasala is currently headed by Aryavaidyan P.K. Warrier. It is now more than fifty years since he took charge at the helm. And during this period KAV witnessed appreciable growth and popularity and has now become a premier centre for Ayurveda in India. Dr. P.K. Warrier is also the Chief Physician and is ably assisted by other senior and experienced physicians.

The Ayurvedic Hospital and Research Centre at Kottakkal has 160 rooms with necessary amenities. The chief physician can be consulted only by appointment made at least 10 days in advance. Accommodation options at the nursing home include family blocks, double rooms, single rooms and suites.

Kottakkal Arya Vaidyasala has two production units; one at Kottakkal itself and the other at Kanjikode in Palakkad district for the manufacture of about 500 genuine Ayurvedic medicines. At a charitable hospital coming under KAV, deserving poor patients are given Ayurvedic and Allopathic treatments. Medicines, accommodation and food are provided free-of-cost here.

KAV has branches in New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Secunderabad, Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Trivandrum, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Aluva, Kozhikode, Kannur, Palakkad and Tirur. It also has over 900 authorized dealers in a network for the sale of Ayurvedic medicines.

The Research and Development wing of KAV is a noted one for its activities focused on the modernization of production and quality control of Ayurvedic drugs. KAV also has a separate department for the publication of various books on Ayurveda and medicinal plants. A quarterly medical journal Arya Vaidyan is a publication of KAV.

KAV besides being a noted name in the field of Ayurveda in Kerala also is credited for one of the oldest Kathakali troupes in Kerala. A dramatic group was formed by its founder, the late Vaidyaratnam P.S.Warier, who himself was a connoisseur of arts. This dramatic group was later converted to a Kathakali troupe and named P.S.V. Natyasangham. This troupe has eminent artistes who stage Kathakali performances in India and abroad.

Today, Kottakkal Arya Vaidyasala is a name synonymous with Ayurveda… a name that offers a new lease of life to the suffering humanity. It has now become the destination of ailing patients; rich and poor alike, students and scholars from India and abroad.
