Keralam - Museum of History and Heritage
Historically, Kerala had relationships with people from far off places. Traders, travellers, missionaries and even invaders from the Middle East, China and Europe came to the shores of Kerala.
In the backdrop of Kerala's history, the socio-cultural and religious spheres of Kerala evolved and they assimilated many and eventually sustained what was there in the ethnic forms and also these which came to Kerala from foreign lands.
Kerala has museums located in different parts that would take one to the state's olden days. Various kinds of exhibits collected from different parts of Kerala and those that came from outside shed light on different periods in the history of Kerala that reveal many aspects of life.
One such museum and among the latest in the State of Kerala that has many interesting exhibits for the visitors is
Keralam - Museum of History and Heritage. This museum housed in a building that exudes a mix of colonial as well as traditional architecture is located inside the premises of the Tourism Directorate.
The museum, a joint venture of Kerala Tourism and the State Department of Archaeology is equipped with modern display techniques like touch-screen counters and multimedia systems to explain the artifacts that are arranged in different galleries. The museum also has the facility to screen documentaries on aspects of Kerala’s culture.
The exhibits here at the Keralam - Museum of History and Heritage include the archeological evidences of Neolithic age, sculptures of gods and goddesses in bronze, wood and stone, coins, murals and many more.
Some of the main attractions of this museum include burial accompaniments belonging to the Iron Age, the Roman Dinari, pointing to Kerala’s maritime contacts with the Roman Empire, the Granthas or books, written on palm leaves, in Malayalam and Sanskrit, 17th Century murals from Pundarikapuram Temple, Kottyam, Stone celts, indicating Neolithic inhabitation of Kerala, 14th Century Brahma sculpture, 14th Century Yoga Narasimha Murthy sculpture and the 16th Century Nataraja Sculpture.
Culture Shoppe - the shop that sells replica of exhibits displayed in the museum is also part of the attractions at the Keralam - Museum of History and Heritage.
Museum timings 10 am to 5.30 pm. Closed on Mondays and public holidays
