Book Review – Eravikulam National Park

Munnar with its mist shrouded hills, sprawling tea plantations and ethereal beauty is no doubt a heavenly sight.

Now imagine if Munnar were just the tip of the iceberg with regards to the definition of the word ‘picturesque’.

Pick up and flip through the pages of the book, ‘Eravikulam National Park’, to rediscover beauty in Nature.

A land of montane grasslands sprinkled with Shola forests, Eravikulam is a nature lover’s paradise.

Munnar is the base station from which the trek to these celestial heights begins. A chunk of paradise hidden away in between fluffy clouds, it is 4600 feet above sea level.

The Shola- grass environment is a unique feature of the Western Ghats. An aspect that has made Eravikulam popular among travelers and nature enthusiasts is ‘Neelakurinji’, the flower that blooms only once in 12 years.

Published by Stark World on behalf of Kerala Tourism, the book is the last of a series titled ‘Sanctuary for the Soul’. The series comprises four books dealing with the four major wildlife sanctuaries in Kerala.

Right from the legacy of Munnar, the Muthuvans, elephants and other wildlife, birds, flora, the mystique of the sholas, vibrance of the Neelakurinji, the Nilgiri Tahr and the peerless beauty of the hills, the writer Manu Remakant takes us through the finest nuances of the Eravikulam National Park.

His words paint before us not just the scenic splendor of the land but also the soul and its heart.

Add to that the spectacular photographs by Balan Madhavan and you have in your hands not just a book on wildlife but rather the jungle in all its glory.
