An incredible landscape spread over a hilly terrain of over 172 sq km and located at the southern part of the Western Ghats in Pathanapuram in Kollam district is the Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary. A tropical semi-evergreen forest, the sanctuary with its luxuriant wildlife and enchanting surrounds is a treat in itself.
Trekking Packages at Shendurney
A bevy of trekking packages await travellers at this pristine and luxuriant stretch of green. Packages for soft and hard trekking are available and here we focus on a few hard trekking options.
Wet ‘N’ Wild Trail
The Wet ‘N’ Wild trail which winds its way through moist deciduous forests lets the traveller witness the grandeur of the Sanctuary. This full day package covers a staggering 18 km trek and starts at 8 in the morning and ends by four in the evening. It offers a peep into the grand landscape conjured up by nature as the trail covers altitudinal variations of up to 1000 meters. The trail starts at the Information centre in Thenmala and is sprinkled with sightings of birds and butterflies. The journey lets one experience this wonderland of wildlife with Leopards, Elephants, Sambars, Gaurs, and so on putting in an appearance.
Edapalayam Mount Hiking
The scenic splendour of moist deciduous forests and semi-evergreen forests can be experienced in the Edapalayam mount hiking package. The package lets one explore the trail which covers altitudinal variations of up to 1200 meters and lulls one into a trance with the arresting beauty of the Palaruvi Waterfalls and rich wildlife. Enroute, one will spot Gaurs, Sambars, Elephants and a multitude of birds and butterflies flitting above the trail in gay abandon.
Evergreen Trail
Explore a dreamy trail that winds its way through semi-evergreen and evergreen forests and lets one watch the flagship species of the sanctuary-the Shendurney Tree and Lion-Tailed Macaque. This exciting stretch offers alluring visuals of the rich wildlife and is studded with sparkling streams. One may also get to watch Elephants, Gaurs, and Sloth bears against the stunning backdrop and the trail buzzes with a wide variety of birds and butterflies.
