The people of Kerala are vibrant and because of their cultural diversity, they celebrate numerous festivals that are very close to their hearts. One such festival is the Uthralikavu Pooram of the Sree Ruthira Mahakalikavu Temple at Wadakkancherry.
People from all parts of the world flock to Thrissur district in Kerala during February to take part in this annual festival that opens the doors to native traditions, customs and rituals of God’s Own Country. Associated with innumerable colours and emotions, Uthralikavu Pooram has a uniquely festive spirit that contributes to the celebration of life.
The Pooram is held every year on the second Tuesday of the Malayalam month of Kumbham (which usually falls after mid-February). The festival is renowned for its procession of jumbos that is conducted day and night. The festivities last for eight days and are noted for distinctive rituals and sacred rites.
Besides the colourful festivities and unique rituals, the dynamic music of the traditional percussion ensembles such as the pandimelam and panchavadyam enhances the grandeur of Uthralikavu Pooram.
The structure of Sree Ruthira Mahakalikavu Temple dedicated to Goddess Kali is itself a sight to behold with its traditional style architecture and classic elegance.
Giant tuskers all clad in traditional attire lined up with colourful parasols, swaying venchamarams (white whisks) and alavattams (peacock-feather fans); the temple bathed in shimmering lights, and sky painted with the magic of fireworks – are sights that no one would want to miss!
