A tranquil beach away from the hustle and bustle of city life, a destination that comes alive only during the occasional visits by tourists or when fishermen either launch their boats into the sea or dry some of their catch - this is Kappad Beach in Kozhikode district, the only beach in Kerala to get international Blue Flag certification. The tagging is given to those freshwater or marine resources that pass stringent global standards of cleanliness, safety, eco-friendliness and sustainability.
Also known as Kappakadavu Beach, this is the historic beach where Vasco da Gama is said to have first set foot in India on 27 May 1498. The spice route flourished through the beach and a walk around the place gives one an idea of its historical relevance.
Its topography, the small rock formations and the view of coconut palms lining the coast have attracted tourists from the state and elsewhere. A rocky headland protrudes into the sea here and a temple, said to be over 800 years old, stands on it. There are a couple of shacks near the beach and they have an excellent collection of local delicacies and beverages.
The uncrowded and unspoilt backwaters are another beauty of Kappad. To enjoy the scenic beauty and experience the village life, tourists can even take a ride down the backwaters through the Korappuzha River to reach the beach.
A bewitching place for beach lovers, adventure freaks and couples, Kappad Beach has always something new to offer its visitors.
