Anchuruli Tunnel, Idukki
A favourite of adventure seekers, Anchuruli is a tourist destination located in the catchment area of the Idukki dam. Perched at a height of 2,430 ft above sea level, Anchuruli, also spelt Anjuruli, is known for a 5.5-km long circular tunnel that carries water from Erattayar dam near Kattappana to Idukki reservoir and the gushing waterfall.
The word Anchuruli means “five vessels” and it refers to the five small hills that are in the shape of inverted vessels that become visible when the water level in the Idukki reservoir comes down.
We get a scenic view of the Idukki dam and can relish the charming and captivating beauty of Nature amid the gushing of waters and chirping of birds. When the water level dips, we can literally witness light at the end of the tunnel. The flow of water during the monsoon is high and we have to be careful during this time.
Those who enjoy fishing will love to spend some time here. If you intend to explore the interiors, you can seek permission from the forest office and go trekking.
Kalvari Mount, Ayyapancovil Hanging Bridge and Thooval Waterfalls are some of the nearby tourist places.
