Bonacaud, Thiruvananthapuram

Nestled on the foothills of the Agasthya hills of Western Ghats, Bonacaud in Thiruvananthapuram district is a pristine, green haven that presents a multitude of experiences. Also known as Bonakkad, the place has several scenic spots like evergreen forest stretches, waterfalls and tea estates.

With a variety of trees, rivers and rivulets along the roads, the road towards the quaint place itself offers a unique experience. En route, we can check out the Vithura Jersey farm and the beautiful Vazhvanthol waterfalls. This vast green paradise was once home to tea plantations started by the British about 135 years ago. It has structures that remind us of life in the bygone era, and also serves as a base camp for trekking to Agasthyarkoodam Peak, one of the highest peaks in Kerala.

There is a watchtower that offers fascinating views of the Peppara dam reservoir, mountain ranges and Bonacaud estate. The closed tea factory is a reminder of the brisk business that once flourished in the area.

There are a couple of beautiful waterfalls to see if we take the route from Bonacaud to Agasthyarkoodam. Just 4 km from Bonacaud is Bona Falls, which is a stunning cascade that supports abundant fauna wealth. There is a trekking destination nearby called Pandippathi where we can see gaur and other wild animals at close quarters.

A preferred film shooting location, Bonacaud is also a place known for birding. Grey wagtail, forest wagtail, greenish leaf warbler and Asian brown flycatcher are some of the commonly spotted birds in the area.
