Full of rustic charm and serenity, Hariharapuram village is nestled near Varkala in Thiruvananthapuram district. Resting on the banks of Edava Nadayara Lake, the village is located hardly 10 km from noted Kappil beach.
Enriched by the vastness of the backwaters, the village reveals all its treasures if you take a boat cruise. Rustic life opens up in the village noted for fish farming and paddy cultivation. Pearl spot, mussels, crab and squid are some of the fish cultivated here and taken to far-off markets. Tender coconuts from the village are in high demand. It is said that the coconut palms along the banks of the lake are flourished by the mineral-rich Edava Nadayara Lake.
The region has a rich tradition of coir-making. It used to be a hub of coir manufacturing and the products from here used to be exported to different parts of the state. If you head to the nearby Nellettil, we can see women under the Nellettil Coir Industrial Co-Operative Society busy making coir using the spinning machine.
Our Lady of Pallithody Grotto situated on the banks of the lake is a favourite resting point for tourists. Anchumoorthy Temple and St Thomas Church are the noted religious centre in this hamlet. The annual festivals at the temple and the church are a period of celebrations for the residents here.
The nearby Priyadarshini Boat Club at Kappil offers immense boating options. By taking a cruise, we can soak in the beauty of tranquil backwaters, lush-green coconut grooves, islands, bird species and paddy fields.
At Hariharapuram, life moves at a very sedate pace, letting you linger over and savour every little moment of joy.
