A spectacular tiny island on the backwaters in Alappuzha district, Kakkathuruthu shot to fame after National Geographic travel magazine listed it in ‘Around the World in 24 Hours,’ a photographic tour of travel-worthy spots in the world. The sunset seen from the island is considered to be the best in the world, the magazine says in its photographic tour.
The serene, calm island is located at Ezhupunna panchayat and is surrounded by the vast Vembanad Lake. We can reach the tiny island, 3 km long and 2 km wide, by country boats only. There are around 200-odd houses on the ‘island of crows’, and residents’ only mode of transportation to the mainland is country boats. We can see a lot of vacant plots among the small houses.
Unlike other islands in the region, Kakkathuruthu doesn’t sink even during the heavy rains and is a haven for migratory birds. Swaying coconut palms, green paddy fields, ducks frolicking in the waters, small ponds, a variety of birds perched on trees and narrow muddy roads greet us during our stroll through the small island.
Photographers will love this place as there are several picture-postcard frames in the island. We can catch the beauty of the rustic village life here, and it is like going to the past. Time stands still here and we can feel a calm, relaxing atmosphere here. Fishing is a common activity of the good-hearted residents here in this idyllic world. There is an Ayurveda hospital and Anganwadion the island.
Away from the hustle and bustle, Kakkathuruthu takes us to a world where people live a happy and satisfied life in Nature's lap.
