Stationed at the heart of Malappuram city, Kottakkunnu is one of the most popular picnic spots in the district. Kottakkunnu, which means ‘the mount with the fort’, is also a historically important place which has witnessed many anti-British struggles. This is where freedom fighter Variyam Kunnath Kunjahammed Haji was shot to death for fighting the British.
The table-top place derives its name from an old fort built by the Zamorins of Kozhikode, and traces of the old fort and other monuments can be seen on the hills. Compared to the picturesque Marine Drive in Mumbai, Kottakkunnu has a mesmerizing garden and is home to a variety of attractions and activities that both the elders and kids will love.
Children’s Park, Adventure Park, Cycle Track, Arangu Open Air Auditorium, 9D Theater, Balloon Park and Bumper Park are some of the attractions at Kottakkunnu. Kids will have a gala time here as there are more than 30 rides in the park. Two special attractions are a musical fountain and a laser show on weekends and festival days.
As it is located at the heart of the city, and the KSRTC bus station is hardly one km from the location, it is quite easy to reach the popular hotspot. Evenings are quite buzzing here with groups of families and friends thronging the place to unwind after a hard day.
The murals at the nearby Vettakkorumakan and Siva temples form another attraction of the area.
