Malabar Botanical Garden and Institute for Plant Sciences (MBGIPS) at Olavanna grama panchayat in Kozhikode district is a reflection of the biodiversity of Kerala. With vast tracts of wetland, it is one of the leading botanical gardens in India in the collection of aquatic plants.
Spread over 40 acres with over 10,000 varieties of plants, the garden has eight greenhouses for primitive plants (like mosses and ferns), shade-loving plants, orchids, medicinal plants, aquatic plants, etc. A facility under the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment, the botanical garden is home to a variety of rare and exotic flora.
An aquatic plant conservatory, a protected area for lower-group plants, a garden based on taxonomic classification, a quarter for Rare Endangered and Threatened (RET) plant species, a herbal garden, Gymnosperm section and Hortus Valley, where almost all the 700 plants mentioned in the Hortus Malabaricus are arranged, are some of the attractions at the MBGIPS.
To help visitors understand each plant, QR codes have been assigned to each plant. When we scan the QR code next to the signboards, we will be navigated to a page that contains detailed information about the plant.
An attractive spot in the garden is the conservation centre housing 140-odd varieties of ferns. A collection of indoor plants like Aglaonema and Pink Princess can be found on the premises. The carnivorous house has prey-hunting plant species such as Nepenthes and Venus flytraps. The garden, spread over 5 acres, also has a huge collection of medicinal plants.
The garden is situated at Olavanna, which is around 8km from Kozhikode city. It is open on all working days from 10 am to 5 pm.
Mayiladumkunnu Viewpoint, Sarovaram Biopark, SM Street and Kozhikode beach are some of the nearby tourist places.
