Wayanad in northern Kerala, with its marvellous host of attractions, is a place that is hard to resist. Add to it, the Cheengeri Hills which are located on the way to Kaduvakuzhi from Sultan Bathery. If you are an early riser, and if you love trekking, you wouldn't want to miss out on Cheengeri Hills. Even if you are not much of an adventurer, it doesn't matter; the slopes are gentle, there is plenty of barren land where you can catch your breath and rest. Moreover, the hilly region doesn’t look like a dense forest. An authorized trekking spot in Wayanad, it presents its best shows in the morning. Therefore, it is always advisable to start early.
The sunrise view from atop the hills is considered magical. In between, catch a glimpse of stunning rock formations and the misty cover. A gentle breeze brushes past you occasionally. Don't worry about the steep hike since there are hanging ropes to help you all along the way. Before the main hill, a small hill is the first target. You can rest for a while here before heading to the final destination. You won’t lose your track here because there are flag points clearly indicating the trekking path.
Be sure to follow the flag points, and you will reach the top. If you are right in time for the sunrise, keep your cameras ready. If you are luck and climate is favourable, the beautiful cover of clouds enveloping the hills will be visible. If not, gaze around for mesmerising views of the reservoirs of Karapuzha Dam, Kolagappara and Manjappara. It’s slightly windy here but never throw caution to the wind.
There are cordoned-off places where entry is strictly restricted. Make sure you don’t step over the ropes since it can lead to danger. Hold on to the ropes as you make your descent from the hills. Pose for a good click while you take a break on the barren areas of the hills.
