A crucial part of the Idukki hydroelectric project, the Kulamavu dam is located in Idukki district in Kerala. The dam is built on Kilivillithode, a tributary of the Periyar River. The Idukki reservoir comprises Idukki arch dam, Cheruthoni Dam and Kulamavu Dam. The building of these three dams resulted in the creation of a 60-square-kilometre artificial reservoir. The picturesque dam, operated and maintained by the Kerala State Electricity Board was completed in the year 1977. The upper part of this gravity dam is constructed with concrete, while the lower section is a work of masonry.
Water is diverted through a long power tunnel and pressure shaft to an underground power house at Moolamattom. Kulamavu Dam and adjacent places are ideal picnic spots. Boat trips are another attraction here. When blessed with perfect weather, the places surrounding the dam make for some great scenes. However, photography is not allowed at Kulamavu Dam and tourists are not allowed to park their vehicles near the dam. They can enjoy its beauty from the Killivali viewpoint, 50 metres from the man-made construction. Bird species like snake birds and kingfishers are an additional attraction at Kulamavu.
