Payyoli Beach, Kozhikode

Step in to Payyoli Beach in Kozhikode district and get ready to be blown away by its golden sands, shallow waters, swaying palm trees and calm environs. Located around 35 km north of Kozhikode, the beach is ideal for swimming and other water sports.

Payyoli is also well known as the home and training ground of India's former sprint queen, P. T. Usha. Usha, one of the greatest athletes the country has produced, is nicknamed the "Payyoli Express".

During the November-December period, hordes of endangered Olive Ridley turtles come down to the seashore to lay eggs. The Nature conservation centre started by the local fisherfolk and named 'Theeram', runs here to protect rare species.

About a kilometre-and-a-half north of Payyoli is the sandbank at the estuary of Moorad river. The area is a haven for bird watchers.

The region is also a place to explore culinary trails as it is bordered by beach shacks that offer a host of delicious snacks and seafood.

Kunjali Marakkar Museum, Velliyamkallu, Trikkottur Perumalpuram Temple and Thikkodi drive-in beach and lighthouse are the nearby tourist places.
