If you are in Kottayam, drive along the Erattupetta-Pala route and visit the Poonjar Palace. A stupendous architectural piece, this palace is a glowing testimony to the rich past of Kerala. The palace is a marvel, not just for architecture buffs but even for other visitors. Built using the best of wood, it features exquisite furniture, tiles made of granite, laterite and clay and beautiful artefacts.
Take your time and absorb the beauty of the timeless chandeliers, jewel boxes, palanquin, palm leaf engravings, sculptures, grain measures, weapons, statues and different types of furniture. There is a conch here, which is used for special occasions. Massive walls guard the palace, almost like a reminder of the regal era. Can you imagine a replica of Madhura Meenakshi temple here?
You heard it right. The temple walls are inscribed with mythological stories. The temple lamps made of stone make for a beautiful sight. The row of lamps carved from stones can be seen on the walls of the Sastha temple too. It is said that rock-cut lamps are a rare sight in the country. The palace is located at Meenachil Taluk in Kottayam.
