Thanni Beach, Kollam
An unexplored destination, Thanni Beach in Kollam district is a secluded place and suitable picnic centre to spend some quality time with your family and friends. Located on the Varkala-Kollam coastal road, the beach is popular among locals as well as outsiders.
Around one-and-a-half kilometres into the sea is Pozhikkara where the sea meets the lake. Breakwaters (Pulimuttu) are laid along the shore to reduce the intensity of the waves, making the coast safer and secure for visitors. A thin stretch of land divides the sea and the Paravur lake, offering the twin beauties of the backwaters and the sea at one point. The ride through this separation of waterbodies is itself a great experience. There are a lot of visitors who just stop by the road and enjoy the beauty. The calm backwaters, steady breeze and thick canopy marked by coconut trees lend some laid-back moments to the visitors.
There are fishing hamlets nearby and if we arrive early in the morning we can buy the fresh catch. Early mornings are also the time when these spots buzz with activity, as fishermen return with the catch and vendors try to get a good bargain.
Thanks to its long stretch, the beach has ample space for everyone to soak in the moments. A children’s park nearby offers a kids a multitude of rides to enjoy the picnic.
