A quaint village in the Kottayam district, Vaikom is known for its pristine water bodies and village experiences showcasing the state's lifestyle and spiritual significance. It is also one of the major responsible tourism destinations in Kerala. The PEPPER (PEOPLE’S PARTICIPATION FOR PARTICIPATORY PLANNING AND EMPOWERMENT THROUGH RESPONSIBLE TOURISM) project was initially implemented in Vaikom temporarily, and supported by the World Tourism Organisation (WTO). The project encouraged the residents and local bodies to get involved in the decision-making part of tourism activities. Through this project, tourists get a first-hand experience of village lifestyles and can take part in the festivals of the region. The PEPPER project also promotes traditional crafts, like weaving and earthen pot making.
Vaikom is also one of the oldest townships in South India, and was the venue for the Vaikom Satyagraha, the much-famed civil rights movement in Indian history.
The Vembanad Lake and the Murinjapuzha Backwaters are sights to behold in Vaikom. There are also narrow canals that meander through villages, where tourists can experience cruising. They also get a chance to relish the lifestyle of Kerala villages. They can enjoy seeing the various processes of the weaving industry, pottery making, coir making or the art of creating products made from coconut trees. They can also watch the traditional fishing methods, taste authentic Kerala Onasadya served on banana leaves, and savour the local sweet toddy. People can enjoy the cultural and ritual art form, ‘Kalamezhuthu’ at the Vaikom Mahadeva Temple, a noted Hindu pilgrimage centre at Vaikom.
