Chuttippara – Spellbinding Beauty in Central Kerala

Towering at 200 feet, Chuttippara in Pathanamthitta district beckons visitors to witness its majestic beauty at the magical moments of sunrise and sunset. With its striking array of towering rocks, Chuttippara provides visitors with a panoramic view of Pathanamthitta town. Atop the hill stands the Harihara Mahadeva Temple, a revered sanctuary dedicated to Lord Shiva, with ancient tales connecting its significance to the worship of Lord Rama. Surrounding Chuttippara are three hills - Chelavirichapara, Kattadipara, and Pulipara - each believed to have connections to characters from the Ramayana.

According to local legend, Chelavirichapara is named after the place where Goddess Sita used to spread her clothes to dry, with "chela" referring to "clothes" and "viricha" meaning "spread out". Similarly, Kattadipara is associated with Hanuman, the illustrious son of Vayu, the wind deity. Kattadipara, renowned for its blustery conditions, is said to have offered respite to Hanuman, the revered monkey god. According to local legends, Lord Rama and Goddess Sita took refuge in a guha (cave) atop the hill, where a naturally-formed shelf served as their resting spot.

Not only does this stunning refuge have historical significance, it also hosts a wide range of plant and animal species, attracting Nature lovers and history buffs alike.
