Moozhiyar Dam lies close to the Kakki reservoir in Pathanamthitta district, in central Kerala. Nestled in the verdant forest of Ranni, this dam contributes largely to the Kakkad Hydroelectric Project. After being used to generate electricity, water from the power station is released into the Moozhiyar Reservoir. From the look-out point inside the forest, you can see the Penstock pipes that connect the reservoir to the powerhouse.
Its reservoir not only serves as a source of hydroelectric power generation but also contributes to the conservation of water resources, benefiting both the local population and the ecosystem. The Upper Moozhiyar Dam, constructed under the Sabarigiri Augmentation Scheme, is an earth-fill dam situated across the Moozhiyar River in Seethathodu. It supplements the Sabarigiri Hydro Electric Project, which ranks as the state's second-largest hydroelectric venture.
Access to Moozhiyar is typically through Seethathodu, where travellers can find various small shops along the route. Tourists must leave the forest area before 06:00 pm due to safety and security concerns. The weather is unpredictable, and it can rain heavily or clear out quickly. The journey to Moozhiyar promises a unique experience, as it is a birdwatcher's paradise as well.
