Muniyara, Idukki: Explore Megalithic Relics at Marayoor
Marayoor, nestled on the slopes of the Western Ghats in Idukki district, is one of Kerala’s most significant prehistoric sites. The region is renowned for its Dolmenoid cists, or Muniyara, which are ancient burial chambers constructed using large stones. These structures date back to the Megalithic age and continue to attract archaeologists and history enthusiasts from around the world.
The Muniyara, also referred to as Dolmens, consist of massive stones erected to form a chamber, with a large capstone placed on top. Some of these Dolmens contain multiple burial chambers, while others have just a single chamber. This site, apart from its historical importance, is also a visual treat, offering visitors a glimpse into ancient architectural practices.
Marayoor is also famed for its natural sandalwood forests and prehistoric rock paintings, further adding to the area’s allure. The Muniyaras in Munnar, situated just 1.5 km from The Wind Munnar, a premium cliff-edge cottage, provide easy access for visitors. You can reach the site by a short drive or enjoy a scenic trek.
For the best experience, trekking to the Dolmens during the evening between 4:00 pm and 5:30 pm is recommended. The trek offers picturesque views and untouched natural beauty. Visitors are treated to panoramic, 360° views of the surrounding landscape, and on clear days, the sunset from Muniyara is simply breathtaking. The location, with its serene ambience, is perfect for photographers and is also a popular spot for honeymooners seeking tranquillity and beautiful vistas.
