Raja Ravi Varma Art Gallery

The Raja Ravi Varma Art Gallery is a state-of-the-art facility exclusively dedicated to showcasing the major works of Raja Ravi Varma, which were previously housed in the Sree Chitra Art Gallery. Raja Ravi Varma (April 29, 1848 – October 2, 1906), born in Kilimanoor within the aristocracy of the Travancore kingdom, is one of India’s most celebrated artists. The new gallery, spanning 12,000 square feet, is located adjacent to the Sree Chitra Art Gallery within the Museum and Zoo campus in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

The gallery is a distinct entity within the Napier Museum and holds 134 works by Raja Ravi Varma, including 46 paintings, 14 oleographs, and 16 pencil sketches. Among the gallery's most prized possessions are Ravi Varma's exquisite works, which are of immense cultural and artistic significance. This initiative underscores the importance of preserving and displaying the masterpieces of one of India’s most illustrious artists. The gallery also exhibits certificates Ravi Varma received from Chicago and Vienna in 1893 for his works sent from Kilimanoor Palace. The oil paintings on display were donated by Kilimanoor Palace in 1935.

In addition, the gallery features works by Ravi Varma’s brother, C. Raja Raja Varma, and sister, Mangala Bai Thampuratti, further enriching its collection. This dedicated space not only honors Raja Ravi Varma’s legacy but also enhances Kerala’s cultural landscape, offering art enthusiasts a comprehensive view of his contributions to Indian art.

A souvenir shop offering memorabilia is available, along with wheelchairs for visitors in need. Guide services are also offered upon request.

The gallery is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 A.M. to 04:45 P.M., and closed on Mondays and select public holidays, including Republic Day, Independence Day, Thiruvonam, and Mahanavami.
