A Hidden Gem in Malappuram - Vakkad Beach

Malappuram, often hailed as the cultural capital of Kerala, unfolds its stories through its people and places. The land is a tapestry woven from threads of history, culture and natural beauty. This district stands as a testament to Kerala’s rich heritage and its harmonious blend of tradition and modernity.  It is a mosaic of mosques and temples, where the muezzin’s call to prayer mingles with the Sanskrit chants of rituals. One can find the spirit of centuries-old traditions in every corner, from the grand festivals that bring communities together to the serene rituals that carry on quietly through the generations.

The district’s cultural tapestry is woven with the threads of Theyyam, the vibrant ritualistic dance form that embodies the divine, and Kathakali, the classical dance-drama that narrates ancient epics through intricate movements and expressions. Every village and town has its own folklore and rituals, keeping alive the essence of Kerala’s cultural heritage.

Nature has blessed Malappuram with abundant beauty, from the rolling hills of Nilambur to the tranquil backwaters of Tirur. The district is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and Nature lovers alike, with places like the Karimpuzha Wildlife Sanctuary offering a glimpse into Kerala’s rich biodiversity. Here, elephants roam freely in their natural habitat, and rare species of birds sing melodiously from the treetops. The pristine beaches of the land, where golden sands meet the azure waters of the Arabian Sea, beckon travellers seeking solace. Each sunset paints the sky in hues of orange and pink, casting a spell of tranquility over those who witness this natural spectacle.

Vakkad Beach stands as a hidden gem within the Malappuram district of Kerala, India. Tucked away from the bustling crowds yet easily accessible, this pristine stretch of coastline offers visitors a serene retreat amidst Nature's splendour.

Vakkad Beach is celebrated for its unspoiled beauty and tranquil ambience. Located near the town of Ponnani, it stretches along the Malabar Coast, where gentle waves lap against the shore, creating a soothing melody that echoes through the air. The beach is characterised by its soft golden sands that invite visitors to walk barefoot and feel the warmth of the sun on their skin. Unlike some of Kerala's more touristy beaches, Vakkad retains a sense of untouched natural beauty. Its quietude is punctuated only by the occasional call of seabirds and the gentle rustling of palm fronds swaying in the coastal breeze. This makes it an ideal destination for those seeking a peaceful escape from the hectic pace of urban life.

The place where the meandering Tirur river pours into the Arabian Sea, the area is blessed with surreal natural beauty and is a haven for migratory as well as sea birds. The nearby fishing villages, with their traditional thatched-roof houses and vibrant community life, provide an authentic backdrop to the coastal experience. Fishermen can often be seen hauling in their catch of the day, using age-old techniques passed down through generations.

While you enjoy the tranquility of the beach be sure to explore the cuisine as well. The cuisine of Vakkad reflects its coastal heritage, with fresh seafood taking centrestage. Visitors can savour delicacies like spicy fish curry, grilled prawns and fried squid at local eateries and beachside stalls. The flavours are enhanced by aromatic spices and coconut, creating a culinary journey that complements the natural beauty of the surroundings.
