A Sanctuary for the Soul - Vellikkeel Eco-Park

An unexplored haven set amidst lush greenery and tranquil backwaters awaits travellers to Morazha in Kannur. A land that beckons travellers with its alluring serenity and soothing vibes, the Vellikkeel Eco-Park is a must-visit destination for all Nature lovers. Here, every leaf whispers tales of conservation and every breeze carries the fragrance of rejuvenation.

The highlight of the eco park, developed by the District Tourism Promotion Council, is its never-ending stretch of mangrove forests that makes for a beautiful spectacle. The best way in which to enjoy the true beauty and splendour of the mangroves is to explore it via the boat rides that are available here. As the boat weaves its way towards the mangroves, close enough for you to actually touch its protruding roots, a profound sense of awe will overcome you.

Specialised coastal plants that thrive in the intertidal zones of tropical and subtropical regions, mangroves have a unique ability to survive and thrive in saline conditions where freshwater meets seawater. This makes them invaluable in protecting coastal areas from erosion, storm surges and tsunamis. The mangroves play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance of the land. For this very reason it is delightful to see and experience the way in which the Vellikkeel Eco-Park protects and nurtures its mangroves. This delicate network of vital ecosystems provides habitats for a diverse array of marine and terrestrial species. The intricate root systems of mangroves provide shelter and breeding grounds for fish, crustaceans and mollusks, which in turn support local fisheries and provide food security for coastal communities. As you step into the embrace of the park, you are greeted by a symphony of birdcalls and the gentle rustling of leaves. Considered to be an ecologically significant location, it is commonplace to sight migratory birds in the area. Comfortable seating areas, a park with swings and other recreational equipment for children, options for boating, Nature walks and trekking trails and the multi-cuisine restaurant in the vicinity make it a much sought after destination for one-day trips and picnics by the locals and tourists alike. One of the highlights of the park apart from its natural beauty and verdant surroundings is the myriad local delicacies on offer. Be sure to try out ‘uruliyappam', the local delicacy which is made from a paste of onions, coconut and rice. There is also a wide array of different types of puttu, ranging from crab puttu to prawn puttu, to try out over here.
