Kochi's own laces and needle work

The weft and warp weaves turn into delicate designs on the length of the fabric. Most of the lace, crocheted and embroidered pieces have an old-world charm owing to designs once popular in Italy and Spain. However, modern patterns are also used.

The needle work is mainly done at Our Lady’s Convent at Palluruthy, Thoppumpady and Vimala Welfare Centre, Kacheripady. The products find takers in tourists and are on display in many shops including those at Jews Street, Mattancherry.

The two production centres – Vimala Welfare Centre and Our Lady’s Convent, run by nuns, specialize in this high quality needlework and embroidery and employ many women. Their products range from hand kerchiefs to saris and table clothes. Orders come from all over world for the exquisite pieces worked on with great patience.
