The Kutchi Muslims
Kutchi Muslims, better known as Kutchi Memons, form another migrant group that has contributed much to the social and economic life of Mattancherry.
These traders from the Kutch area of Gujarat migrated to the coastal regions of Kerala such as Alappuzha and Kochi when their trade with Kerala began to flourish. The migration occurred mainly in 19th century and many soon became established traders here. Some of the old establishments can still be seen in Mattancherry.
The Memons use a language that is a mixture of Sindhi and Gujarati. Inspite of retaining their language, customs and traditions, these traders have blended in well in their adopted home.
