M. G. Road
M. G. Road is the most urbanized face of Kochi. With its array of textile shops, restaurants, jewellery shops and shops selling stuff ranging from household items to electronic goods, it is the shopper’s paradise of Kerala. In this area - the most expensive in the State - the price of the land is Rs one crore (10 million) for a cent.
M. G. Road is well-known for its shopping complexes, textile shops, jewellery shops and its restaurants - some of them sell more than 10 varieties of dosa, the South Indian rice flour pan cake.
Furniture, coir mats and other coir products, screw pine mats and spices are available at the shops here. Handicrafts made of wood, shell, brass and ivory are also available here in handicraft showrooms along this stretch which include the government-run Kairali Handicraft Emporium.
Cinema halls too have found a place here.
M. G. Road – a bit of historyMG Road was earlier known as 70 Feet Road and was famous for its width. Today, however, it is one of the most congested roads in Kochi, with a traffic jam every other day. This is due to the heavy traffic and the increasing commercialization of the area over the years.
