Vallarpadom terminal and other projects
India’s first International Container Transshipment Terminal is to be built at Vallarpadam. This global hub port is expected to make India do away with the present custom of transshipment of Indian containers through adjacent foreign ports like Colombo.
Kochi was selected for the project due to its proximity to the trunk sea trade route.
Vallarpadam and the nearby island Puthuvypeen has also been selected for establishing a port-based Special Economic Zone. A golf course of international standards is also expected to come up in the area.
