The education sector in Kumarakom owes a lot to the Baker family. A. G. Baker’s wife, Fanny, ran a school at her home during the earlier years of their settlement. In 1886, the Annie Baker Memorial School (ABM School) was started by A. G. Baker in remembrance of his sister Annie. An area of 1.5 acres was set apart by Baker for the school.
It started as a kudipallikkoodam, where the students learn from a single asan or teacher. The school, with its thatched roof and mud walls, became the alma mater for many a villager. In course of time, it was renovated and upgraded into an upper primary school. It is now administered by the Government.
